On Saturday 27th August 30 FRAG visitors joined archaeologists from Newcastle and Sheffield Universities at Anchor Church Field, Crowland.

The excavation is seeking evidence to enhance our understanding of the Saxon and Medieval presence at the site where Guthlac sought isolation at the Fen edge.

Avril Lumley Prior was able to provide a fascinating overview of the historic record of Guthlac and his sister, Pega. Duncan Wright went on to provide an update on this year’s excavation.

The piers of an east-west aligned building were evident and details within it were being investigated. The building neighbours the later hall revealed in 2021.

Another trench across an outer ditch identified in aerial photographs was also intriguing. A large post hole was identified and remnants of wood recovered.
