Samian (or terra sigillata) was a form of fine table ware popular throughout the Roman world in the early Empire. It is often associated with higher status Roman buildings. Potter’s stamps can provide valuable information about date and location of manufacture.
We are fortunate to have a specialist who can explain all about this type of plain and moulded pottery. Geoffrey Dannell has been involved in logging Samian finds all over Europe – and he can also address the presence of Samian ware at Peterborough and Nene Valley sites.
