Robert Scarlett was born in 1496 and lived to the ripe old age of 98. You can find a painting of him on the west wall of Peterborough Cathedral. Old Scarlett worked as parish sexton, a role which involved burying the dead in the parish church yard, buying communion bread and tolling the bells. He was at the burials of Henry VIII’s wife Katherine and of Mary Queen of Scots. Get the full story.
