SUMMARY:VISIT: Stonea Camp & March Museum
DESCRIPTION:Stonea Camp is a scheduled site of national importance and has a fascinating history linked to both the Iceni tribe and the Romans. Possibly linked to Queen Boudicca the site itself stands on a gravel island just two metres above sea level. The guided walk around part of the site will look at the archaeology\, the surrounding landscape\, the camps demise and the rise and fall of the impressive Roman Stonea Grange built adjacent to the site. \nDavid Crawford-White will be your expert guide. \nTimes:\nThe walk will start at 10am at the site car park and will last approximately 1.5 hours. Those attending are free to bring a packed lunch or go into March and have a meal at one of the many hostels in the town. The tour of the museum will start at 1pm and will last approximately one hour. It’s a fascinating small museum with some finds from the excavations at Stonea Grange. \nCost:\nThe visit is free to FRAG members other than a suggested donation of £2 for the museum. \nDiscounted 2017 FRAG membership is now available for just £10 which covers this trip and our monthly programme of talks and activities for the remainder of the year. \nLocation:\nThe site is few miles east of March. The site car park is found at the end of a long metalled trackway which is signposted ‘Stonea Camp’ off the B1093 (Wimblington to Manea road). If you need a lift please say on your booking form and we will see what can be arranged. \nOther:\nIf you do not wish to visit the museum please make this clear on the booking form. \nWear suitable footwear and bring waterproofs. It is an open site and can be wet and very windy! The site is an exposed large open field with a range of ‘humps and bumps plus a viewing platform. \nDogs are not allowed as the site is used to graze sheep all year. \nAttendees are not covered by FRAG’s insurance so you are advised to take out your own personal accident insurance if you wish. \nPlease be aware that there are no toilets on the site. \nOutline Schedule \n\n09.45 Arrive at the Stonea Camp carpark\n09.55 Group briefing\n10.00 Tour starts\n11.30 Tour ends\n11.30–12.50 Lunch break in March\n12.50 Meet outside the Museum\n13.00 Tour of the Museum\n14.00 Ends\n\nThe organisers reserve the right to postpone or stop the event at any point.\n\nLATE BOOKING\nAny FRAG members wishing to join the visit who have not already booked please email enquiries@peterborougharchaeology.org by end of Friday 8th September – include full name and phone number \nDOWNLOAD BOOKING FORM

SUMMARY:Curse Tablets of Roman Britain
DESCRIPTION:Deficta est – The Curse Tablets of Roman Britain – A Practical Introduction \nThe curse tablet phenomena is well attested throughout the Roman world. They are the private messages\, never to be read\, to the exotic gods who controlled all things. Whether for retribution or for luck\, they are the gloriously opaque windows into a thoroughly modern ancient world\, 1800 years ago. Over 300 have been recovered from Roman Britain. From the petty theft of a humble ring\, to unrequited love\, the curse tablets from Roman Britain are the real Romans\, warts and all. \nThis event is part presentation and part practical. The first section of the talk will focus on examples of curse tablets recovered from Britain\, highlighting the basic mechanisms the Romano-British utilised in the preparation and delivery of the curse tablets. \nThe second section will be a practical activity\, in which small groups will study a Roman curse tablet. Utilising the skills from the lecture\, participants will be asked to recognise the basic stylistic and formulaic elements of the tablets\, and form a hypotheses of the date and function of the curse. \nSpeaker: Paddy Lambert\, Oxford Archaeology East \nFREE for FRAG members \nPaddy specialises in the history and material culture of the Roman world\, with special interests in cultural syncretism and epigraphy. He has worked extensively on Roman sites across the UK and in Europe\, most recently working on an extensive Roman villa in the south west.

SUMMARY:EXCAVATION - Nassington Barn - 2017
DESCRIPTION:MidNAG is resuming excavations at Nassington. Last year a large Roman barn was revealed and it is hoped that the 2017 dig will start to tell us more about the occupation and uses of the barn and nearby structures. \nThose interested will need to contact (and be members of) the Middle Nene Archaeology Group. \nThere is an Open Day at the site on Sunday 27th August from 11am – 4pm. \nNassington Roman Barn – Dig Diary
