SUMMARY:Zooarchaeology: Animal Bones in Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:There are a lot more animal bones found on archaeological sites than human ones\, and they tell us a lot about the people who left them behind. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nHow do we recover them from a site?\nHow do we use them?\nWhy were they deposited in the ground?\nWhat happened to them after they were deposited?\nWhat can they tell us about how people lived in the past?\nCan we link them to history?\n\nJust a few questions for the zooarchaeologist to answer. \nIn our workshop you will examine archaeological animal bones to identify\, measure and age them as well as looking for what the animals were used for. You will discover how animals like frogs\, tortoises\, mice\, sheep\, and deer were part of the human story in the past. \nThere will be an interval before the practical session and attendees are invited to bring a sweet or savoury snack to enjoy and share. \nOSTEOARCHAEOLOGY WORKSHOP OUTLINE \n\nWhat does an archaeologist do?\nWhat does an osteoarchaeologist do?\nHow are bones used?\nFour practical exercises:\nIdentification\nTaphonomy\nMeasurement\nAgeing \nFeedback from groups\nReview\n\nFREE for FRAG members \nSpeaker: Paul Clarkson \nFollowing his teaching career Paul studied for the Advanced Diploma in the Historic Environment at Cambridge University\, then an MSc in Osteoarchaeology at Bournemouth University. He has participated in many excavations.

SUMMARY:Nassington 2017 - What Did We Find?
DESCRIPTION:Year One at Nassington revealed a large stone Roman barn and ancillary features including a corn dryer. \nThere were many unanswered questions so FRAG members joined forces with MidNAG to excavate again this August. \nDirector of Excavations\, Derek Roberts\, joins us to provide first feedback on what we have learned. The talk will consist of new finds and features from the season 2 excavations and thoughts for the future with a brief look at the recently conducted 5 hectare magnetometer survey. \nSpeaker – Derek Roberts\nDerek is co-founder of the contract archaeological unit Pre-Develop Archaeology. After reading Archaeological science at Sheffield University he excavated extensively around Britain with different contract units and had a very brief spell in France. He honed his skills working on urban archaeological sites in Carlisle\, London and Greater London and Colchester and now finds himself back where he started excavating in the Nene Valley. \nFREE for FRAG members \nNassington Roman Barn – Dig Diary
