SUMMARY:Zooarchaeology: Animal Bones in Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:There are a lot more animal bones found on archaeological sites than human ones\, and they tell us a lot about the people who left them behind. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nHow do we recover them from a site?\nHow do we use them?\nWhy were they deposited in the ground?\nWhat happened to them after they were deposited?\nWhat can they tell us about how people lived in the past?\nCan we link them to history?\n\nJust a few questions for the zooarchaeologist to answer. \nIn our workshop you will examine archaeological animal bones to identify\, measure and age them as well as looking for what the animals were used for. You will discover how animals like frogs\, tortoises\, mice\, sheep\, and deer were part of the human story in the past. \nThere will be an interval before the practical session and attendees are invited to bring a sweet or savoury snack to enjoy and share. \nOSTEOARCHAEOLOGY WORKSHOP OUTLINE \n\nWhat does an archaeologist do?\nWhat does an osteoarchaeologist do?\nHow are bones used?\nFour practical exercises:\nIdentification\nTaphonomy\nMeasurement\nAgeing \nFeedback from groups\nReview\n\nFREE for FRAG members \nSpeaker: Paul Clarkson \nFollowing his teaching career Paul studied for the Advanced Diploma in the Historic Environment at Cambridge University\, then an MSc in Osteoarchaeology at Bournemouth University. He has participated in many excavations.

SUMMARY:Nassington 2017 - What Did We Find?
DESCRIPTION:Year One at Nassington revealed a large stone Roman barn and ancillary features including a corn dryer. \nThere were many unanswered questions so FRAG members joined forces with MidNAG to excavate again this August. \nDirector of Excavations\, Derek Roberts\, joins us to provide first feedback on what we have learned. The talk will consist of new finds and features from the season 2 excavations and thoughts for the future with a brief look at the recently conducted 5 hectare magnetometer survey. \nSpeaker – Derek Roberts\nDerek is co-founder of the contract archaeological unit Pre-Develop Archaeology. After reading Archaeological science at Sheffield University he excavated extensively around Britain with different contract units and had a very brief spell in France. He honed his skills working on urban archaeological sites in Carlisle\, London and Greater London and Colchester and now finds himself back where he started excavating in the Nene Valley. \nFREE for FRAG members \nNassington Roman Barn – Dig Diary

DESCRIPTION:Stonea Camp is a scheduled site of national importance and has a fascinating history linked to both the Iceni tribe and the Romans. Possibly linked to Queen Boudicca the site itself stands on a gravel island just two metres above sea level. The guided walk around part of the site will look at the archaeology\, the surrounding landscape\, the camps demise and the rise and fall of the impressive Roman Stonea Grange built adjacent to the site. \nDavid Crawford-White will be your expert guide. \nTimes:\nThe walk will start at 10am at the site car park and will last approximately 1.5 hours. Those attending are free to bring a packed lunch or go into March and have a meal at one of the many hostels in the town. The tour of the museum will start at 1pm and will last approximately one hour. It’s a fascinating small museum with some finds from the excavations at Stonea Grange. \nCost:\nThe visit is free to FRAG members other than a suggested donation of £2 for the museum. \nDiscounted 2017 FRAG membership is now available for just £10 which covers this trip and our monthly programme of talks and activities for the remainder of the year. \nLocation:\nThe site is few miles east of March. SUMMARY:Curse Tablets of Roman Britain
DESCRIPTION:Deficta est – The Curse Tablets of Roman Britain – A Practical Introduction \nThe curse tablet phenomena is well attested throughout the Roman world. They are the private messages\, never to be read\, to the exotic gods who controlled all things. Whether for retribution or for luck\, they are the gloriously opaque windows into a thoroughly modern ancient world\, 1800 years ago. Over 300 have been recovered from Roman Britain. From the petty theft of a humble ring\, to unrequited love\, the curse tablets from Roman Britain are the real Romans\, warts and all. \nThis event is part presentation and part practical. The first section of the talk will focus on examples of curse tablets recovered from Britain\, highlighting the basic mechanisms the Romano-British utilised in the preparation and delivery of the curse tablets. \nThe second section will be a practical activity\, in which small groups will study a Roman curse tablet. Utilising the skills from the lecture\, participants will be asked to recognise the basic stylistic and formulaic elements of the tablets\, and form a hypotheses of the date and function of the curse. \nSpeaker: Paddy Lambert\, Oxford Archaeology East \nFREE for FRAG members \nPaddy specialises in the history and material culture of the Roman world\, with special interests in cultural syncretism and epigraphy. He has worked extensively on Roman sites across the UK and in Europe\, most recently working on an extensive Roman villa in the south west.

SUMMARY:EXCAVATION - Nassington Barn - 2017
