SUMMARY:EXCAVATION - Fane Road Allotments 2018
DESCRIPTION:FANE ROAD ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP (FRAG) – EVALUATION EXCAVATION 19-22 OCTOBER 2018 \nA large Roman villa was discovered in 2011 prior to construction of new houses between Itter Crescent and Fane Road. The Heritage Lottery funded ‘Romans of Fane Road’ excavation was undertaken in 2014. Since then FRAG has undertaken further archaeological excavations on the Fane Road Allotment Site to ascertain the full extent of the building. \nThe aims of previous excavations were to: establish the location of the southern part of the Iron Age enclosure ditch; establish any outlying Roman building foundations; locate and record Roman middens (rubbish tips); and establish the extent of the Roman metalled surface found in October 2015 with students of the Perse School. \nThis year we will be looking to expand on the successful results of test pit 17-1 which was explored in 2017. The dig is undertaken in partnership with the Fane Road Allotments Association (FRAA). \nThe event is FREE for FRAG & FRAA members \nApplication\nIn order to participate download the application form. Scan or photo your completed form then email as indicated. Closing date for applications is 30 Sep 18. Places are limited and applications received from FRAG and FRAA members (and their families) before 9 Sep 18 will be given priority. \nDOWNLOAD APPLICATION FORM \nVenue\nFane Road Allotments\, Fane Road\, Peterborough. Access will be via the gate off the footpath on the Itter Park side of the allotments. \nDates & Times\nFriday (19 Oct 18) – Monday (22 Oct 18) from 8.00am to 4.30pm daily. \nOpen Days\nSaturday (20 Oct 18) and Sunday (21 Oct 18) 11.00am to 4.00pm (further details will be publicised nearer the event). \nFurther Information\nFRAG – Evaluation Excavation 19-22 Oct 18 \nFane Road Roman Villa

Though primarily a training event the area being surveyed is close to the Roman Villa so has the potential to reveal clues about the landscape in which it was located. \nParticipants need to be FRAG members\, or members of JigSaw affiliated groups who can confirm that they are covered by their own group’s insurance \nThe event is FREE for FRAG members \n  \nApplication\nIn order to participate download the application form. Scan or photo your completed form then email as indicated. Closing date for applications is 30 Sep 18. Places are limited and applications received from FRAG members before 9 Sep 18 will be given priority. \nDOWNLOAD APPLICATION FORM \nVenue\nItter Park\, Itter Crescent\, Peterborough. The survey area will be on the southern open space. \nDates & Times\nWednesday (17 Oct 18) – Thursday (18 Oct 18) from 9.00am to 4.00pm daily. \nTraining Format\nThis is the second geophysical survey training to be undertaken on Itter Park and will follow a similar format to the previous session: \n\nPresent a basic overview of geophysical resistivity survey procedures\nAcquaint participants with the survey equipment\nTeach the principles of setting out a geophysical survey grid\nTeach the principles of conducting a geophysical survey\nProvide a hands-on geophysical resistivity survey experience\nProvide an overview of the data handling soft ‘Snuffler’\, data processing\, and results interpretation and analysis; using examples from other surveys\n\nFurther Information\nFRAG – Geophysical Survey Training 17-18 Oct 18 \nItter-Park-Geophysical-Resistivity-Survey-Report-2017

SUMMARY:Nassington Roman Barn - Year 3
DESCRIPTION:What started as the excavation of a Roman Barn at Nassington is extending into a broader project about agriculture\, industry and daily life in the Nene valley 2000 years ago. \nOur speaker will be Derek Roberts who is the Director of Excavations for the MidNAG dig. A number of FRAG members participated. \nThis will be the first opportunity to provide feedback on what we have learnt this year. As well as the Roman barn which was exposed in 2016 and 2017 we now have more information from geophys\, aerial photography and the 10 exploratory trenches excavated in August. The project is starting to provide insights into the lives of those living in the Nene valley from late Iron Age through to end of the Roman period. \nSpeaker: Derek Roberts\, Director of Excavations\, MidNAG \nFREE for FRAG members \nBack to Nassington – 2018

SUMMARY:EXCAVATION - Ramsey Abbey
DESCRIPTION:Those who attended the talk by Roger Mould on 4th June will know that the Ramsey Abbey Community Project has been successful in securing Heritage Lottery funding following extensive research as they continue to search for the elusive remains of Ramsey Abbey. \nThey are now ready to excavate in August – 13th to 24th. As the project has been awarded lottery funding a professional company will head up the excavation. They will have three big trenches open aimed at features shown on the resisitivity survey. \nThey would welcome volunteers. \nIf you are interested please contact enquiries@peterborougharchaeology.org \nThe Great Benedictine Abbey of Ramsey was the first of the great religious houses in Eastern Fenland to be founded and in its time one of the most important\, influential and wealthiest Abbey in the Fens. In its heyday it was home to at least 80 Monks\, and behind its walls a renowned school was founded in about 985. For over 500 years the Abbey flourished\, but in 1539 the Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII. \nPlease Note this is a Ramsey Abbey Community Project

SUMMARY:Ramsey Abbey - the elusive remains of an extensive site
DESCRIPTION:In April 2017 Ramsey Abbey Community Project was born. What have we discovered and what has the project added to our knowledge of the site? \nThe Great Benedictine Abbey of Ramsey was the first of the great religious houses in Eastern Fenland to be founded and in its time one of the most important\, influential and wealthiest Abbey in the Fens. In its heyday it was home to at least 80 Monks\, and behind its walls a renowned school was founded in about 985. \nFor over 500 years the Abbey flourished\, but in 1539 the Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII. Today there is very little to see of the once great Abbey\, only a wonderful 15th Century Abbey Gate House. \nSpeaker: Roger Mould\, Ramsey Abbey Community Project \nFREE for FRAG Members \nRoger started his archaeology life at Fane Road and launched the Warboys Archaeology Project in 2012. The Ramsey Abbey project is the latest of the team’s work.
