He has excavated widely and wrote a book on the Romans in the East of England which was published in 2008.  A new book on the Romans in the Peterborough area is due to be published soon.  Stephen lectures at the  University of Cambridge\,  is a member of the Chartered Institute for Field Archaeologists and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

DESCRIPTION:The UK’s biggest road construction project involves excavation on a massive scale – 10 million m³. \nRoad widening\, new junctions and a 17-mile bypass south of Huntingdon carve through an archaeological  landscape covering all periods from the earliest hunter-gatherers to WWII. The investigation and mitigation work by MOLA is on a corresponding scale and is due to complete March 2018. \n  \n  \n\n537 trial trenches\n800 ha of potential archaeology\n80 archaeological sites\n130 staff\n\nMore than 25 settlements have been uncovered\, including: Iron Age\, Roman\, Saxon and Medieval sites. \nHelen O’Hara will provide an overview of the archaeology arising from the project. SUMMARY:Ramsey Abbey - the elusive remains of an extensive site
DESCRIPTION:In April 2017 Ramsey Abbey Community Project was born. What have we discovered and what has the project added to our knowledge of the site? \nThe Great Benedictine Abbey of Ramsey was the first of the great religious houses in Eastern Fenland to be founded and in its time one of the most important\, influential and wealthiest Abbey in the Fens.  In its heyday it was home to at least 80 Monks\, and behind its walls a renowned school was founded in about 985. \nFor over 500 years the Abbey flourished\, but in 1539 the Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII. Today there is very little to see of the once great Abbey\, only a wonderful 15th Century Abbey Gate House. \nSpeaker: Roger Mould\, Ramsey Abbey Community Project \nFREE for FRAG Members \nRoger started his archaeology life at Fane Road and launched the Warboys Archaeology Project in 2012. The Ramsey Abbey project is the latest of the team’s work.

SUMMARY:Baston Manor Pit: a middle Bronze Age and Roman landscape
DESCRIPTION:Fieldwork at Baston took place over a 48ha area between 2002 and 2014. The site is located on the western Fen Edge at between 3m and 5m aOD.  \nThe main feature was a middle Bronze Age field system and settlement. A round house\, pits\, wells and a long routeway for moving and sorting cattle were uncovered. SUMMARY:Nassington Roman Barn - Year 3
DESCRIPTION:What started as the excavation of a Roman Barn at Nassington is extending into a broader project about agriculture\, industry and daily life in the Nene valley 2000 years ago. \nOur speaker will be Derek Roberts who is the Director of Excavations for the MidNAG dig. A number of FRAG members participated. \nThis will be the first opportunity to provide feedback on what we have learnt this year. As well as the Roman barn which was exposed in 2016 and 2017 we now have more information from geophys\, aerial photography and the 10 exploratory trenches excavated in August. SUMMARY:EXCAVATION - Fane Road Allotments 2018
DESCRIPTION:FANE ROAD ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP (FRAG) – EVALUATION EXCAVATION 19-22 OCTOBER 2018 \nA large Roman villa was discovered in 2011 prior to construction of new houses between Itter Crescent and Fane Road. The Heritage Lottery funded ‘Romans of Fane Road’ excavation was undertaken in 2014. Since then FRAG has undertaken further archaeological excavations on the Fane Road Allotment Site to ascertain the full extent of the building. \nThe aims of previous excavations were to: establish the location of the southern part of the Iron Age enclosure ditch; establish any outlying Roman building foundations; locate and record Roman middens (rubbish tips); and establish the extent of the Roman metalled surface found in October 2015 with students of the Perse School. \nThis year we will be looking to expand on the successful results of test pit 17-1 which was explored in 2017. The dig is undertaken in partnership with the Fane Road Allotments Association (FRAA). \nThe event is FREE for FRAG & FRAA members \nApplication\nIn order to participate download the application form. SUMMARY:The Snettisham Hoard
DESCRIPTION:At least 12 separate hoards of artefacts have been discovered at Snettisham\, northwest Norfolk. Collectively they are known as the ‘Snettisham Treasure’ and form the largest deposit of gold\, silver and bronze artefacts dating from the Iron Age found in Europe. \nA combined total of over 200 torcs\, over 100 bracelet and ring ‘ingots’\, large amorphous ingots\, 234 coins and many fragments have been recovered\, with a total weight of over 40 kilograms. In addition to its sheer quantity\, the metalwork is famous for its quality of artistry and workmanship. Most of the hoards were buried 100–60 BC\, and were found towards the centre of a large eight-hectare enclosure. DESCRIPTION:Samian (or terra sigillata) was a form of fine table ware popular throughout the Roman world in the early Empire. It is often associated with higher status Roman buildings. Potter’s stamps can provide valuable information about date and location of manufacture. \nWe are fortunate to have a specialist who can explain all about this type of plain and moulded pottery. SUMMARY:EXCAVATION: Fane Road Allotments - Roman Villa
DESCRIPTION:FANE ROAD ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP (FRAG) – EVALUATION EXCAVATION \nA large Roman villa was discovered in 2011 prior to construction of new houses between Itter Crescent and Fane Road. The Heritage Lottery funded ‘Romans of Fane Road’ excavation was undertaken in 2014. Since then FRAG has undertaken further archaeological excavations on the Fane Road Allotment Site to ascertain the full extent of the building. \nThis year we will be looking to expand on the successful results of test pit 17-1 which was explored in 2017. \nFRAG Members Only\n(though members of FR Allotment Association\, and JIGSAW affiliated groups may also participate) \nIf you are interested to participate please download the application form and submit to fieldofficer@peterborougharchaeology.org. Access will be via the gate off the footpath on the Itter Park side of the allotments. \nDates & Times\nFriday (17 May 19) – Monday (20 Oct 19) from 8.00am to 4.30pm daily. \nOpen Days\nSaturday (18 May 19) and Sunday (19 May 19) 11.00am to 4.00pm (further details nearer the event). \nExcavation Strategy\nUnfortunately\, and disappointingly\, the excavation planned for Oct 18 was cancelled at short notice due to circumstances beyond the control of FRAG Field Officers. This\, therefore\, will again be the seventh season of archaeological excavations on the Fane Road Allotment Site. In addition\, the Heritage Lottery funded ‘Romans of Fane Road’ excavation was undertaken in 2014. The aims of previous excavations were to; establish the location of the southern part of the Iron Age enclosure ditch\, establish any outlying Roman building foundations\, locate and record Roman middens (rubbish tips) and establish the extent of the Roman metalled surface found in October 2015 with students of the Perse School. Last year the test pits from previous seasons that produced results requiring further investigation were revisited. SUMMARY:WALK: The Stamford Canal
DESCRIPTION:Join a walk along a section of the Stamford Canal with local authority\, Maggie Ashcroft. \nThe canal was one of the earliest in the country\, constructed in 1670. It is still possible to to identify the course of the canal and see bridges\, locks and other features amongst the undergrowth. \nThe walk will include the section of the canal near Uffington. It will involve a circular country walk of about 4 miles. There is rough and uneven ground which may be slippy if wet. SUMMARY:Peakirk Unwrapped: The Archaeology of a Fen-edge Settlement
DESCRIPTION:Peakirk is known for its association with St Pega\, who reputedly founded a hermitage there and gave the settlement its place-name [‘Pega’s church’]. Whilst Peakirk’s history is sporadically-documented from the eleventh-century onwards\, archaeological evidence indicates that the area first was colonised by Neolithic folk and that there was almost-continuous activity in the heart of the present village from the Romano-British period onwards. \nThis talk unveils Peakirk’s story through a combination of archaeology\, architecture\, topography\, maps\, photographs and written sources. It also features the work of PAST [Peakirk Archaeological Survey Team]\, an independent\, self-funding group\, whose recent projects have included re-plotting the route of the Roman watercourse\, the Car Dyke\, dispelling the ‘tradition’ of a Romano-British villa\, rediscovering ‘lost’ buildings and revealing more about Peakirk’s diverse and secret heritage. \nSpeaker: Dr Avril Lumley Prior \nFREE for FRAG Members \nDr Avril Lumley Prior developed an interest in Anglo-Saxon history during her childhood in Sunderland. After accepting a teaching post in Peterborough\, in 1970\, she transferred her attention from Northumbrian to Mercian studies. Upon her early retirement in 1995\, Avril attained an MA and a PhD on historically-based subjects\, both at Leicester University. She is currently conducting research in and around Peakirk and regularly presents and publishes her findings. With her husband\, Greg\, she is a founder member of PAST [Peakirk Archaeological Survey Team].
