SUMMARY:Saxons in the Nene Valley & FRAG AGM
DESCRIPTION:Saxons in the Nene Valley & FRAG AGM \nFRAG Annual General Meeting \nPlease arrive 10 minutes earlier than usual so we can complete the FRAG AGM in good time for our monthly talk. \nThe Agenda for the AGM is shown below. \nSaxons in the Nene Valley \nThe Nene Valley offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of Saxon settlements and the landscape from the late Roman period through to the time of Domesday. The transition from Roman urbanism to Saxon rural settlements is evident in the archaeological record\, particularly in the form of building remains\, cemeteries\, and changes in settlement patterns. By the 9th century\, the region saw the establishment of territorial units such as hundreds and parishes\, which laid the foundation for the medieval landscape we recognise today. The evidence from the Nene Valley thus provides an important insight into the development of Anglo-Saxon society and its administrative structures\, offering a window into both the continuity and change that characterised the early medieval period in England. \nSpeaker: Professor Stephen Upex \nStephen Upex has written on a wide variety of topics related to British landscape history and archaeology and his interests range from Roman and Saxon landscapes and archaeology to medieval open fields systems. He has directed archaeological excavations on Roman and Saxon sites in the East Midlands and contributed to several Time Team programmes for Channel Four. He lectures at the University of Cambridge. Recently\, Stephen has written a series of landscape and archaeological reports and books on sites within the East Midlands and he is currently working on a volume for the Society of Antiquaries on Roman and Saxon landscape in northern Cambridgeshire. \nFREE for FRAG Members \nNon-members welcome – £5 cash\, payable on the night\n(card payment not currently possible) \nANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE FANE ROAD ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP \n7th APRIL 2025 held at University Centre Peterborough \n\nWelcome and Apologies for absence\nMinutes of AGM held Monday 8th April 2024\n(Matters Arising not covered below)\nChairman’s Report on the past year – Julie Gray\nTreasurer’s Report – Tamsin Foster\nElection of new Committee.\n\nRecommendation for amendment to the constitution \nSuspension of the need for a Field Officer and Safe Guarding Officer if or until the Group resumes an active dig. \nNominations for Committee: \nThose offering themselves for re-election: \nChairman: Julie Gray; Treasurer: Tamsin Foster \nMinutes Secretary: Dan Peeroo \nStanding down: Wendy Gamble\, Daphne Mair\, Nick Coneybear \nOther nominees from members attending? SUMMARY:Curious Cures
DESCRIPTION:Curious Cures: Medicine in the Medieval World \nThis month’s FRAG talk  is also the subject of an exhibition at Cambridge University Library. \nMedieval medicine has a bad reputation. It conjures up images of people blighted by disease and ignorance\, living a degraded existence in squalid villages and pestilence-ridden towns\, and subject to the misguided ministrations of physicians or the bizarre remedies of folk healers and charlatans. We commonly think of the Middle Ages as a time of superstition\, blind trial-and-error and devastating mortality…but that’s not the whole story! \nThis talk will describe the complex theories and ideas that guided medieval physicians in their work\, it introduces the many different constituencies who practised medicine at this time\, and it reveals the bewildering array of ailments and illnesses they sought to cure. \nSpeaker:  Dr James Freeman\, Medieval Manuscripts Specialist\, Cambridge University Library \nJames was the Principal Investigator of the Wellcome-funded project\, Curious Cures and is curator of the exhibition Curious Cures: Medicine in the Medieval World\, which is open to all and free to visit at Cambridge University Library until 6 December 2025. Prior to joining the University Library in 2016\, James worked in various capacities in the Manuscripts and Rare Books Departments at the British Library. He also serves as Assistant Editor for the Transactions of the Cambridge Bibliographical Society and as Chair of the Association for Manuscripts and Archives in Research Collections\, which promotes the study\, accessibility and preservation of manuscripts and archives in Britain\, Ireland and further afield. \nFREE for FRAG Members \nNon-members welcome – £5 cash\, payable on the night\n(card payment not currently possible) \nThe Venue for FRAG Talks is: \nUniversity Centre Peterborough\nPark Crescent\nPE1 4DZ \nWhat3words:  https://w3w.co/grants.liner.slime \nThis is NOT the new university building in the centre of the city\, but is on a shared campus with Peterborough College and is accessed from Park Crescent. \nThere is on-site parking available. \nThe lecture theatre is on the first floor; a lift is available. \nGoogle Map

SUMMARY:Flag Fen Basin 1982-2026
DESCRIPTION:The Archaeology of the Flag Fen Basin 1982-2026 \nThis talk will present forty-four years of archaeological investigations of the Flag Fen Basin. SUMMARY:Hereward the Wake
DESCRIPTION:Hereward the Wake \nThis talk gives a brief survey of our authentic sources of information about Hereward and the most recent research on his parentage and the status of his family in pre-Conquest England. This is followed by a narrative account of his life as evidenced by these sources illustrating how\, in common with many heroic narratives\, the surviving stories of his early life combine mythical and semi-magical incidents with authentic historical events. Then follows his banishment from England\, his military career and marriage in Flanders\, his return to England in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest and his resistance to the invaders with the involvement of Morcar\, the Northern rebels and King Swein of Denmark\, culminating with an account of his leadership of the last resistance to King William with the Isle of Ely as his base. The talk ends with a survey of current theories about Hereward’s subsequent survival and the manner of his death\, and a consideration of what we are looking for in our heroes and why public awareness of them can rise and fall over time. \nSpeaker:  Mike Lynch \nMike was born in Manchester and read English Language and Literature at Oxford University. He taught English for several years in schools and colleges and was subsequently called to the Bar at the Middle Temple\, specialising as a consultant in Employment Law. He is married with two grown-up children and for many years lived in Staffordshire where he served as a County Councillor. Now retired\, he lives in the Cambridge area and teaches courses on Dickens\, Jane Austen and George Eliot at the University of the Third Age in Cambridge. He is a member of the Dickens Fellowship and a member of the Royal Society of Literature. He is currently working on a book of limericks. Since he came to live in the Cambridge area Mike has developed an interest in the life and achievements of one local hero\, Hereward the Wake\, and has delivered several lectures on this illustrious figure.
