SUMMARY:Flag Fen Basin 1982-2026
DESCRIPTION:The Archaeology of the Flag Fen Basin 1982-2026 \nThis talk will present forty-four years of archaeological investigations of the Flag Fen Basin. The talk begins with the discovery of Flag Fen in 1982\, and the work of the Fenland Archaeological Trust (the first twenty years)\, and continues with a detailed description of the Cambridge Archaeological Unit’s excavations at Bradley Fen\, Horsey Hill and Must Farm (2000-2025). The final part of the presentation returns to Flag Fen and shares the latest work at the site including new ideas regarding the monument’s context and interpretation in light of the adjacent excavations. \nSpeaker: Mark Knight\, Senior Project Officer\, Cambridge Archaeological Unit \nMark Knight\, was the Dig Director of Must Farm excavations for the CAU. Mark specialises in prehistoric landscapes\, as well as Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery. His interests include exploring later prehistoric contexts of inhabitation and mobility\, and comprehending the lives of people in southern Britain between 3800-800 BC. \nAfter completing his degree in 1995\, Mark joined the CAU and began researching the prehistoric Fens\, a landscape that still absorbs him some 20 years on. The AGM will also be pushed back to the May talk session. \nOur sincerest apologies\, but Julie and Tamsin will be there anyway if anyone fancies a chat and a coffee or tea\, possibly a biscuit. \nFRAG Annual General Meeting – PLUS: \nDone and Dusted – A Follow-Up to ‘Dusting Off the Archives’ \nWe’re delighted to welcome back Jay Cumberworth BA (Hons) ACIfA\, Archaeology Project Officer at Peterborough Museum. \nJay will be bringing us up to date with all things Archaeology at Peterborough Museum. \nThe latest acquisitions\, along with a follow-up on the Peterborough Archaeological Archive Enhancement Project (PAAEP) which some of us have been involved in over the years and won the award for Excellence from the Society for Museum Archaeology (SMA). \nHe’ll also be sharing more about ‘My Must Farm’\, a soon to be permanent display showcasing some of the remarkable Must Farm artefacts. \nAs if that wasn’t enough\, Jay will give us a glimpse into some intriguing upcoming projects — sure to surprise and delight\, and it’s probably not what you might expect! \nPeterborough Museum has recently been awarded a £250\,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support a two-year initiative centred on the internationally significant Bronze Age archaeology of Must Farm. \nThere’s a chance to have your say in coming weeks. DESCRIPTION:Come to the Feast: Communal Agriculture in an Iron Age Landscape at Willow Hall Farm\, Thorney \nAlbion Archaeology’s 8 years of excavations at this quarry have revealed an extensive Iron Age agricultural landscape. While the later Iron Age remains represent a fairly standard set of enclosures\, the site functioned as a communal grain store in the early Iron Age\, complete with evidence for ritual feasting activity. \nSpeaker: David Ingham FSA MCiFA\, Project Manager – Albion Archaeology \nDavid holds an MA in Classics and an MSt In Professional Archaeology from Oxford University. Kevin will be giving an overview of the location\, history & heritage\, reason for investigating and investigations undertaken for each of the society’s projects. \nSawtry Archaeology is a group within Sawtry History Society that is committed to investigating the archaeological record of Sawtry and neighbouring communities\, and presenting interpreted findings in the public domain in order to enrich the communal heritage. \nSome of you may have joined Kevin on one or more of these events and there will be more opportunities to join in of the course of this year as well. \nThe next planned excavation is at Alconbury Weston on 13th June

SUMMARY:Hereward the Wake
DESCRIPTION:Hereward the Wake \nThis talk gives a brief survey of our authentic sources of information about Hereward and the most recent research on his parentage and the status of his family in pre-Conquest England. This is followed by a narrative account of his life as evidenced by these sources illustrating how\, in common with many heroic narratives\, the surviving stories of his early life combine mythical and semi-magical incidents with authentic historical events. Then follows his banishment from England\, his military career and marriage in Flanders\, his return to England in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest and his resistance to the invaders with the involvement of Morcar\, the Northern rebels and King Swein of Denmark\, culminating with an account of his leadership of the last resistance to King William with the Isle of Ely as his base. The talk ends with a survey of current theories about Hereward’s subsequent survival and the manner of his death\, and a consideration of what we are looking for in our heroes and why public awareness of them can rise and fall over time. \nSpeaker:  Mike Lynch \nMike was born in Manchester and read English Language and Literature at Oxford University. He taught English for several years in schools and colleges and was subsequently called to the Bar at the Middle Temple\, specialising as a consultant in Employment Law. He is married with two grown-up children and for many years lived in Staffordshire where he served as a County Councillor. Now retired\, he lives in the Cambridge area and teaches courses on Dickens\, Jane Austen and George Eliot at the University of the Third Age in Cambridge. He is a member of the Dickens Fellowship and a member of the Royal Society of Literature. He is currently working on a book of limericks.
